HIV vaccine awareness day

HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD) is observed this week on May 18. This day is an opportunity to recognize the many volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective vaccine to prevent HIV. Such a vaccine, along with existing HIV treatment and prevention strategies, would help achieve the goal of ending the HIV epidemic.

HVAD commemorates US President Bill Clinton's 1997 declaration that, “only a truly effective, preventive HIV vaccine can limit and eventually eliminate the threat of AIDS”. 

More than 1 million new HIV infections occur each year. Ending the global HIV/AIDS pandemic will require an effective HIV vaccine. At STARoDub we feel the importance to acknowledge the diverse range of HIV prevention research programs going on in the world today. There are many promising scenarios being explored, including broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs), messenger RNA (mRNA)-based vaccines or those using human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) vectors.

The research efforts toward the worldwide goal of developing a vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS is truly inspiring and will hopefully lead to a successful vaccine in the near future.
