World Diabetes Day (WDD)
In 2007 the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 61/225 designating November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The recognized document “the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health and provide access to treatment and health-care education.”
The resolution also encouraged Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes in line with the sustainable development of their health-care systems.
Today, approximately 537 million people worldwide live with diabetes according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the number is expected to rise above 700 million by 2040.
WDD provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition.
The theme for WDD between 2021 and 2023 is: “Access to diabetes care”. 100 years after the discovery of insulin, millions of people with diabetes around the world cannot access the care they need. People around the world need access to medicines, innovative technologies, education, ongoing care and support to manage their diabetes and avoid complications.
