Alzheimer’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disease and the most common form of dementia worldwide. Clinical symptoms include memory loss, disorientation, mood and behavioral changes. In general, symptoms develop slowly and worsen over time, finally resulting in total loss of independence.
Today, September 21th, has been declared World Alzheimer’s Day. Our STARoDub team wants to contribute to raising awareness for this devastating disease. With the increasing average life span and growing elderly population, there is a great need for more knowledge on Alzheimer’s Disease. There is no cure yet, however medication has been developed to relieve some symptoms. Drug substances such as donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine are cholinesterase inhibitors, which prevent the enzyme acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine. This leads to a higher concentration of acetylcholine in the brain, which leads to better communication between nerve cells. In addition, medication has been registered that contain memantine. This substance protects nerve cells by blocking the effects of too much glutamate.
Currently, there is a lot of research ongoing for new drug treatments. The hope is that these can lead to a better relief of symptoms or even slow down or stop the neurodegeneration.
At STARoDub we are very interested to assist you in bringing new products to the market. If you are interested to learn what we can do for your product, please reach out.
